All about needle valves

From hydraulic to pneumatic industries, a wide range of valves and pipe fittings are used across different angle needle valvesindustries. These components ensure proper functioning of different systems.

Commonly used valves include stainless steel check valves, natural gas ball valves and angle needle valves.

Some valves are used only for shut-off and on applications, while others may be used to regulate fluid flow. The application ultimately depends on a valve’s design and suitability for use.

Today, we aim to discuss the design and applications of needle valves.

An introduction to needle valves

These valves are designed in a way that allows them to precisely regulate the fluid flow. However, these valves generally function at low flow rates.

The design of a typical needle valve includes a tapered pin which gradually opens the space, allowing for precise flow control. This is regulated and controlled with a spindle.

Needle valves generally have a small orifice along with a long, tapered seat. They also have a needle-shaped plunger present at the end of a screw, perfectly fitting the seat.

How do they work?needle valves

When the screw is turned, the plunger retracts making it possible for fluid to flow between the plunger and the seat. However, the flow will be impeded considerably until the plunger is fully retracted.

As it may take several turns of the screw to fully retract the plunger, it is possible to regulate the flow rate effectively.

Applications of needle valves

These valves are mainly used to control fluid flow in delicate gauges. These gauges might get damaged by sudden surges of the passing fluid under high pressure. Hence, the use of needle valves is extremely necessary to make these components last long.

The valves are also used in applications where the fluid flow must be halted gradually. Precise adjustments of flow are needed or a very small flow is required in such applications. The use of these valves allows attaining such low flow rates.

These valves can also be used for throttling services and as on/off valves. Also, they work efficiently in vacuum systems as they require precise control of gas flow. This flow must be maintained at low pressure conditions, for instance, while filling gas-filled tubes, lasers and other devices.
